What is the meaning of "bando" in the film ZULU?

Early in the film, two soldiers are told to go up a hill on lookout. One neglects to take his rifle so the sergeant throws it to him and says "Don't forget your BANDO." Where does bando come from.? I am former military and know my weapons, but never heard this. It was a Welsh regiment.
