Atheist parenting: Did I go too far on this punishment?
I'm not atheist, but am a parent. Since your son doesn't normally lie, that should have rung a bell as to why he felt he couldn't tell you or dad the truth in the first place. Depending on an eight year old to get information is a big no no, although it seemed to work out this one time. Kids are curious, kids want to know what their sexual feelings are about, kids want to know. Who better than to find a friend to experiment. Since your son's behavior on lying is not normal, here's what I would do. Talk to him about why he was punished. It wasn't the girl in the room as much as he lied. Focus on the lying, not the sexual intentions. Next, let him know that this is the end of the year, and this is his last field trip. Therefore, he will still be punished but it will start next week. This week is a real important end of the school year event. Punishment resumes on ....such and such date. Just to let you know, I'm a Christian, but being a parent is th same rules. Teaching our kids right from wrong, and to trust us.
